Our Coffee Journey

From a single Probat roaster to Portland's favorite neighborhood cafe

How Artisan Roasters Began

Head roaster Elena Park spent eight years in corporate coffee before deciding she wanted to do things differently. In 2016, she found a small storefront on SE Division Street, installed a vintage Probat roaster, and started pulling shots for the neighborhood.

The concept was simple: source exceptional beans, roast them with care, and create a space where people actually want to linger. Within a year, Artisan Roasters had become the kind of place where regulars don't need to order. We already know their drink.

Our Sourcing Philosophy

We buy beans directly from farms in Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, and Kenya. Direct trade means we pay premium prices, often 40% above commodity rates, which supports sustainable farming practices and rewards growers for exceptional quality.

Every lot we buy gets a full cupping evaluation before we commit. We roast in small batches to preserve the unique character of each origin, and we rotate our single-origin offerings monthly so there's always something new to discover.

What Sets Us Apart

In-House Roasting

Every bean served at Artisan Roasters is roasted on-site in our vintage Probat roaster. You can smell the fresh roast from the sidewalk.

Direct Trade Relationships

We maintain direct relationships with farmers in four countries, visiting origin at least once per year to cup new lots and ensure quality.

Trained Baristas

Every barista completes a 40-hour training program covering extraction science, latte art, and customer service before they touch the machine.
